I was participating in a discussion recently in which someone had been attempting to raise a table saw blade through a new zero clearance insert (ZCI). The saw had a riving knife installed and the instructions that were provided with the machine did not address the fact that it is not possible to raise a running saw blade up through a ZCI without first removing the riving knife. Cold calling Part 2

Cold calling has become something of an “evil” in recent years. No one has ever really appreciated being interrupted by someone calling them to ask if they would be interested in buying a box of oat crunchies or a magazine subscription. And most of us have had our fill of calls from people trying to convince us that we can save money by switching long distance carriers or insurance companies. But, cold calling is still one of the best ways to find new customers. It just has to be done right. (more…)

Cold calling

The question of cold calling has gotten a lot of ink in Woodshop News lately. For anyone who does not know, this is the practice of contacting a potential client without any previous arrangement or appointment. Basically, you just pick a number, call it and begin pitching your product or service to whomever happens to answer the phone. This has become much more of an issue recently because, with the economy being so difficult, more people are more needful of trying to drum up new business. (more…)

Veteran’s Day

Yes, I am a veteran. But I am one of those who had the dubious honor of being a veteran of the only war America ever fought and lost. I have always been somewhat ambiguous about Veteran’s Day. On the one hand I feel that it’s only fitting that we acknowledge the contributions of those who have served their country. But, being completely confounded by the idea of wars in the first place, I can’t quite shake off the sense that we might better serve and honor the memory of those who have been subjected to this horror by making sure that no one ever has to go through that again. There is no arguing about the appeal of a new, good quality, “high tech” machine. There is something about the sleek lines, the digital readouts, the touchpad controls, the overall look and feel, that makes us want them in our shops in spite of the fact that they can be hideously expensive or that we might not actually need them or have sufficient applications to keep them running at the clip we would need to in order to justify the cost.
